Our Story

When Charlotte civic leaders launched Kids Voting in their city for Election 1992, they intended to run the program every 4 years. However, after casting their first votes in the 1992 presidential election, students had another idea. Thousands of kids enthusiastically showed up at the polls ready to make their voices heard in the 1993 local election. As a result, the community decided to make Kids Voting an annual event! Since the program began, nearly 1 million Charlotte-Mecklenburg students have participated. In 2011, the organization changed its name to GenerationNation, and expanded its programming to educate and engage students every day of the year. GenerationNation programs include successful annual Kids Voting election as well as the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Youth Council, Youth Leadership Charlotte-Mecklenburg, and other K-12 civic literacy initiatives.
